Create Overlay, Layer or Map Sheet from another Map?

jlagercrantz

If I have two maps, one with a lot of polygons and I want to display those polygons on the other map, not by default but by some way that needs to be turned on to see them, what's the best way to accomplish that?

I know I could just import all the polygons from the one map to the other and keep them in a folder that is disabled to show on load but I would rather not add the objects to the map as it already contains a lot of objects and I don't want to make it slower to load.

The polygons won't really change so it's pretty much static content. I have used Map Sheets before but how would I export the Polygons to an image or something that I can load as a Map Sheet?

Any other ways to accomplish this rather easily?

The most seamless way to achieve this is to import the polygons as you mentioned, put them in a folder and turn on visibility when you need them.

You can also export a map as a PDF, and then import it as a custom mapsheet, however I don't think this will achieve the desired effect.

    Thanks for the reply Rachel.
The problem with importing the polygons is that there are a lot of them. Can you confirm if adding them slows down the loading of the map, even if the folder they are in is unchecked on load?

It will certainly slow down your map to add a large amount of objects if it is already a very large file. I recommend only importing the necessary polygons.

If you want to print to a PDF and upload something as a map sheet, use these links to the user guide for more information:

Thanks. I think Mapsheet is the best way to go here but is there a way to create something where the background is transparent? As in I don't want to overlay the base layer onto the map twice because the base layer is also part of the PDF map?

Actually I think I got that part figured out. Just save it with one of the map layers that shows a white background (due to data missing for our area), then edit it in photoshop and delete the white background.

I now have a new problem :) When I go to load it as a map sheet, I can upload it, get the popup that it's not geospatial and I have to align it by hand. Click OK on that popup but the next screen to align it never appears. It works fine on a different map, but not the one I want it on.

    Any ideas?

It sounds like that file does not work with the system. Send us an email to help@caltopo.com for further assistance. If you can include the file that you are trying to upload that can be helpful.

I think this discussion is as close to the topic as I have found. I was also trying to layer a PDF map sheet on top of the main layer. When I am initially lining everything up the image is crystal clear. However, when I upload it into the system it saves as very blurry. Any ideas on how to help with this? Format maybe?
