Map goes gray when I zoom in off-line
Yesterday while hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park I zoomed in and the map went gray. When I zoomed out the topo lines and features appeared again. At home with wifi I can zoom in as far as I want. Do I need to download maps to my phone before hikes?

Yes, download in advance. And select high resolution rather than standard.
How do I download maps in advance?
On the phone app, in upper left corner, select the 3 dashes. From the menu, select Download Layers.
It is very important that you read the CalTopo Help instructions to do this. After that, it is very easy.
