Imbedding pictures in a map sheet Completed

Norm Young

Sure would be great to be able to take geomarked pictures and display thumbnails in Caltopo.  We are laying out hiking trails for our local trails nonprofit and we take lots of pictures along the route and store them in Google Photos.  Nice to be able to click on a thumbnail of those  pictures in a map sheet and be able to see them in Caltopo/Google Photos if that's possible.

This feature is in the works. I do not have an ETA as it is a large project, but we are planning to add photo waypoints soon.

I second this request. As an active SAR member in a very remote mountainous location in Colorado we rely heavily on SARtopo. The ability to add thumbnails of pics of backcountry locations within SARtopo would be a game changer for us. It would be used in our master map that we pull data from when creating a mission map. I can add a pic via URL and placemark but it is not user friendly and there's no way to minimize the pic and have it "clickable" to expand. Please consider adding this option. I would be willing to participate in any testing required. Thank you.

I would like to see this feature added as well. We use SARTopo in wildland firefighting and incident management, specifically in communications. Having the ability to add photos to markers would really help us to track communications inventory and deployments.

I would also like this feature.  It would be very helpful in SAR

It would be great to have this feature for clues and logistical information. Please add if possible.

I notice in the Map Items there is the option to Import from the Photo Library or Take Photo or Video. Nothing seems to happen though. Is this a work in progress?

110% on this. it's one of about 3 features I want on here that the backcountry app has over this. please add!

I know it's a big deal to add photos, but a file sharing folder that is set to off by default would be so awesome! would also be good for certain forms. seems like a good pro account item to me.

If this feature was added it would totally eliminate my need for any other backcountry mapping app.

The lack of this feature is why we have to continue to use Gaia for some important work.

I've sent this feedback in several times and haven't really heard anything. Have you guys been sending requests frequently?

I was able to import a small group of photos into a Caltopo map once but I did not write down how I did it.  I use Houdah and some other applications to plot my photos on maps, but not Arc since I'm a mac user.  Therefore, I might have brought in a kmz file of my located photos???  I vaguely recall using a Google Earth based kmz with my photos .

Rachel: Really excited to hear that there's movement on this feature. IMO, this is one important feature that Gaia has that is missing from CalTopo/SARTopo. I do understand that it's not a light lift. Thanks for making it a priority.

I'm really looking forward to this feature being added. I have a mapping project to tackle this summer and it would completely eliminate the need for Gaia.

This is the one feature that Caltop doesn't have that keeps GaiGPS on my phone.

This is definitively a needed feature.  I this exactly the same reason I still have GaiaGPS on my phone as well.  As a backcountry ranger this feature would be extremely useful for reporting resource damage, photos of difficult routes into the canyons for assist the other rangers and countless other uses.

Going to chime in this is a pretty critical feature. Being able to include images to show like "here is the traverse, follow this line, the class4 move is here" is extremely useful.

Very excited for this feature! When developing a new bouldering area I create a waypoint for each boulder or cluster of boulders and attach pictures of the climbs. Currently this forces me to use Gaia ☹️

Can we get an update? Looks like it’s been a year since photo waypoints were to be added. 😳 Rachel?
    Thank you!

hello Walter. I know I am just some guy, but I wanted to tell you that I saw it with my own eyes a few days ago in action from a tester for them and it's looking pretty good. I don't know an ETA, but I am hopeful. they know how valuable this feature is for SAR so it's on their priority list, but it is a big and difficult project.

  • Being an active member of SAR I can also say this feature would be very helpful, our members always say they wish this was part of the current app hopefully we will see something soon

Great job on the imbedded images. its a game changer for my team. I would like to ask that images be viewable from one map to another like tracks and "other maps" can be with a way to move the image to the current map like with tracks. Thank you.

Embedded images pushed our team to finally purchase a subscription - thank you for including this feature!

I scouted trail conditions on a new map with ~30 embedded photos yesterday on iOS. I was out of cell service for most of the activity.

Today I went to start cleaning up my data on my PC, and the images have not yet synced on the web version 24 hours later. My iOS device has been connected to wifi for a whole day, and mobile data upload is also enabled. Around 80% of the images show as "No Image Data" on the web version. My iOS device shows all the images in the Caltopo app.

Is a slow sync a known issue? How long should syncing 30 photos take on a fast wifi connection?

    Cheers - Jay

    Jay -

On Fri, I discovered that each image upload from an iOS device to our server is taking a minute or more, compared to a handful of seconds for Android.  I'm not sure why, but I suspect it's due to processing the image on the server, and nothing to do with the app or data connection.  We're investigating and will hopefully get that corrected soon.

I can't say for sure that this is necessary, but can you try leaving your phone screen on with the CalTopo app in the foreground (if you update to our latest version, pressing the location button so it turns into a lock icon and stays centered on your location will keep the screen on, if you have a short timeout) for 15-20 minutes?  I also want to note that the broken image icons will not currently auto-refresh, you have to reload the map viewer to fetch a new copy and see if they are synced.

    Hi Matt,

I’m running into the same issue. Leaving CalTopo open on my iPhone for about 30 minutes synced almost all of the backlog except for two. I noticed that during this time the phone got pretty warm until it seemed to sync everything it was going to sync. Is there also some client side processing slowing things down?

    Thanks,
    Eric

    Eric -

There shouldn't be, at least not during the sync stage as opposed to right when you take the photo.  As for the warmth, I'm wondering if some of that might be from having the screen on, that's not something I have a good reference point for.  Just to confirm, were you on wifi (the cell modem can burn more power)?

Yes I was on wifi. It seemed to cool off after 20 minutes even though the screen was still on. Could be coincidence or something else. Maybe GPS use settles down if you're in one place?
