Satellite Image Dates

Karen Gotski

I recently had to plan a search in an area where a river was braided and changing over time.  The Global Imagery view turned out to be closer to what we found in the area than the Google satellite view.  Unfortunately I couldn't tell that when planning. The Google image when viewed on Sartopo had a 2022 copyright date but if I went directly to Google Earth (which appeared to show the same image) the image date was June 2018. The Global Imagery layer listed several sources but the only date was where it said "contains modified Copernicus data (2019). It can be very important to know when the image was taken.

Is there a way to see accurate dates on the satellite images for the various base layers?

The global imagery layer is stitched together from a variety of different sources at different dates, and we don't have the ability to provide a date for a specific location + zoom level combination.

While it doesn't have the same resolution, if you need to know what something looked like at a particular point in time, we'd recommend using the Sentinel layer.
