WOW!! Street View and Google Maps

John Dickinson

Congrats and thanks CalTopo.

For those of you with the Caltopo mobile app ( and a pro level account? ) it appears that CalTopo has contracted with Google to have a Google Base Maps option that also includes Street View for photographs taken on trails!    First of all we get Googles 1-2M satellite view and now Street Views of back country.   Thanks CalTopo.

    HI John,

We did combine CalTopo and SARTopo some months ago, so now there is effectively no difference between the two. If you are having trouble using SARTopo links, you may need to update the app. Older versions of the mobile app will really struggle with SARTopo links, but the new version will handle them just fine.

As for Google layers - you may see and use them when using the web app, but Google's licensing does not permit us to use their layers in our mobile app.

    Hope that helps!

Please ignore all the above.   CalTopo, I actually wish you would delete it.

This was an interesting set of circumstances.   I opened a SARTopo link on my PC browser from an E-Mail.

This triggered a login - which is normal for me.  But the login was under the CalTopo database url.  A bookmark was created for the map which showed under my team account but it was created with a new Map ID which I didn't notice until later.

When I pulled the map up on my phone by looking at My Maps and by clicking on the Circled I (info) icon and the link, the link was for the caltopo database, not the sartopo database. I did not notice this.

I got what looked to be the correct map but the interface was changed and looked a lot like the website ( an excellent idea by the way - if you could make it work, CalTopo ) but what I saw was the Google Satellite view was now available on the phone.   I got excited  and wrote the above thanks.   It was only on further research that I noticed that I could not add a track to the map.  The SAR / recreation mode was blank. I had update access but even after fixing the mode I still couldn't create a track. This is when I realized that CalTopo had not updated the interface - they just posted the webpage in full screen mode so it acted more like an app.

NOTE:   CalTopo, if you read this, there is a bug i told team mates that I thought you had added Google maps and they tried the same process and got the same results.    I think it has something to do with the SAR/Recreation mode not being populated and that triggering the login to the caltopo and not sartopo linkages.
