Merging data from multiple maps into a single map.

I have data from the same area spread across multiple maps.  I would like to merge all of this data into a single map.  Can this be done?  Perhaps using the export function?  I've tried but no luck so here I am.

    You will need to export the data from each map and import into the map you'd like the data in:

    What would be helpful is if the export tool provided an option to select an existing saved map - functioning similar to the way the export to new map works, it would just write the objects directly to the selected map instead of dealing with some intermediate file.
