Select layers and overlays directly from Catalog

I like the ability to curate the primary layer/overlay selection down to the choices that I routinely use., since that reduces the size by a factor of ten or so.

However, for those every-once-in-a-while times when I want something else, it would be nice to be able to select it directly from the Catalog, rather than needing to turn it on so that it's in the curated view, select it there, then later deselect it and go to the Catalog to disable it.
