APRS integration with software TNC

Facundo Fernandez

I am a licensed ham radio operator and I volunteer with my local Emergency communications ARES organization in Georgia, USA. I am interested in integrating Caltopo with APRS using the UZ7HO software modem called "Soundmodem". This approach has long replaced hardware TNC for APRS. Soundmodem can be accessed via port 127.0.0.1 using a KISS port (typically 8100). I have searched but have not found any examples on how to integrate this type of KISS modem into the Caltopo topo.prpperties file. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hi,

Although I do not have the Soundmodem reading through the User Guide of the modem it seems you can have a KISS server report to Port 8100. Here is a photo from the Soundmodem User Guide

Marc, what instructions do you use in the caltopo properties file to connect to port 8100?

I can't think of a way to configure our desktop software to support this; we're only set up to read from COM ports.  If you're comfortable with programming, you could set up a small script that reads from the KISS connection and make corresponding REST-style requests to the local desktop instance, though.  A preliminary search also suggests that there are options out there to map the port 8100 TCP connection to a virtual COM port, which we should be able to read from, but it's not a space I'm familiar with.

I'll add it to the list as something to consider alongside reading from hardware ports.
