Audio/Visual Alerts for Off-Limit Zones
Hello,
We were working a case over the summer where we ran into an issue where a local property owner who owned the bulk of the land in a section of our work area was an absolute prick about gaining access to his land. He had dozens of cellular cameras around his property line (super wealthy individual) and was notorious about calling police and neighbors to ream them anytime he spotted people trespassing on his land. The particular victim we were searching for was an armed and potentially dangerous veteran suffering from extreme PTSD/paranoia as well as potential legal issues, drug dependence, etc.
Due to the attitude of this particular property owner, even though this area was high on our priority list as a result of employing Lost Person Behavior techniques, we opted to search some of the more readily accessible areas that were a bit more outside of that search area. Because of us being so cautious as to avoid upsetting this property owner, we ended up being only 300' from the victim's body on a search, but accessing the area the body was found without trespassing involved some very meticulous movements that our team wasn't comfortable making. Instead, the homeowner of a property adjacent to that restricted property ended up finding the man's decaying body several weeks later along with his teenage son, which is exactly why our team exists...to try and find these victims before homeowners, kids, etc., have to see those kinds of horrors.
What would be an awesome feature would be the addition of an audio/visual alert when your device running CalTopo begins to approach/enter restricted zones. Having a little code experience...if it were me employing the feature, what I think would work is to add an option under the polygon feature (maybe the buffer zone feature as well?) with a checkbox for 'Restricted Area' and when the GPS location of the device is detected entering that area, perhaps offer a gentle beep sound that repeats while inside the restricted polygon/buffer until the device is detected as being back outside of the area. In addition to that, for those who have their devices silenced, adding a small little graphic of a stoplight or just a little light symbol in the corner of that map that is green when in normal search areas, yellow within xx feet of a restricted zone, and red when inside a restricted area would offer an adequate non-intrusive visual indicator.
I think by doing something along those lines, it could be an easy feature addition, would help keep searchers from accidentally trespassing especially in areas where the landowners are adamantly against searchers setting foot on their properties, and would keep the resource usage low to avoid any issues with lagging or excessive battery usage.
Thanks!
