Waypoint metadata in GPX exports
It'd be useful to have <sym>/<cmt>/<type> metadata in GPX exports to indicate waypoints' types. This already exists in the GeoJSON export, but is currently missing from GPX.
My use case for this is an open-source program that converts GPX routes/tracks and waypoints into Garmin FIT courses and course points. With Gaia GPS and Ride with GPS GPX exports, there's enough metadata in there to map waypoints into meaningful course point types; CalTopo doesn't do that yet.

I don't want to suggest that we'd necessarily be able to support this, but can you share in more detail how you handle these fields? Our GPX generation code has been around a very long time, but one of the reasons the sym tag isn't included is that because there's no standard symbol set, handheld GPSs wouldn't be able to do anything valuable with that information. We did make one exception for the USAR icons, which export as Custom-* for compatibility with FEMA's iron sights symbol set. Are devices now able to read a full URL, or are we just including the text name of the icon, and if the latter, how is that handled in the FIT file and displayed to users?
