Missing labels on pdf map

Greg Kallio

I am building a map that has six interconnected trails, where each trail has a label (name). When I print a pdf, some trail labels are missing even though they appear on the original map. There appears to be enough space for the labels. The page size is 11x17 and the scale is roughly 1:14700. How do I get all labels to appear on the pdf?  Should I try a larger page size? Or, maybe shorten the labels?

What's the largest you've tried exporting (to a .pdf)?   Obviously I want all the labels to appear.

I'm a complete newbie on CalTopo - and wanting to export area trail maps as large / hi-dpi as possible for printing on Tyvek - I can print ~41" tall x ___ (probably ~24-36" wide for that orientation) - or 41" wide x ~54" tall for that orientation.

I tried 13x19 at about 1:11,000 and it included all my trail labels. So, I'm thinking that a larger format may be the key,   Greg

    Did a larger format work?

While there might appear to be enough space, labels are printed along the length of a line, and there's a limit to the amount we can "bend" the text to make it follow the line, while still looking good.  Shortening the labels helps with this as it's easier to find a straight spot that can fit the label.  Similarly, using a larger format to cover the same area gives larger, straighter sections along the line for us to fit the text in.

A larger page size worked (13x19).  I'll remember to keep labels as short as possible. It would be really nice if Caltopo had a text box map object so that miscellaneous text could added anywhere on the page.
