Maidenhead grid locator system for amateur radio

Randydarden

The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Locator_System is used extensively in amateur radio to quickly convey either a rough location (example CM87) or a more precise location. I've started using CalTopo to map local and distant radio resources as I learn more about RF propagation and it would be a big help to be able to search for and move the map to the center of a grid locator using the search box (as I would with decimal lat/lon for example).

At least two radio programs (Summits On The Air and Parks On The Air) appear to have a lot of CalTopo users.

Thanks!

I would like this over w3w. I love that there are no negative numbers and there is a clear relationship from one square to another.

If you're looking for a short-term solution to this, we could add maidenhead to the vocalcoords.com app (I'm the developer and it looks like it could be done pretty quickly), which provides links to caltopo at that location.

I would love this. I use Caltopo to log all my ham radio mobile activations (mostly Parks On The Air) and having the grid overlay would mean one less tool to use when uploading my logs.
