Open Location Code Support

Justin Simoni

Open Location Code, or "Plus Codes" are in essence a way to share simplified coords.

Google Maps produces them and entering the full location code will get you to the location it shares, so long as you have the city/State (example) included. If you put this into the search bar of Caltopo:

  • HQP5+RX Lone Pine, California

It'll take you to the correct place (Mt. Whitney Trailhead). But if you use just the code,

  • HQP5+RX

It will not. So perhaps partial support is already included? Of course, I don't think caltopo produces these codes to share.

Maybe as a corollary to this, is support for linking to a Caltopo Map to a specific coord (officially). You can kinda do that now, but there are some issues.

This sounds useful to SAR operations along the lines of What3Words ( though that system is closed/commercial)

I tried to see where HQP5+RX is and it gave me a location in my own province.

Moving around a bit in Google Maps, it seems to be in several places within a state or province.

Kind of like using the minutes and seconds part of a latitude and longitude.
