Black and White Base Map

Richard Collette

Most of the maps I print are for hiking/canoeing which means they tend to be in map areas that are shaded green.  Unfortunately, this results in black and white laser prints that have poor feature contrast.   I print out maps for my scout troop and unfortunately, the boys are more critical of this issue than an adult would be.  Color printing for an entire scout troop is too expensive for me, though in color they look amazing.

Can we get a black and white or high contrast base layer, that uses symbology to represent terrain types, suburban/forest, etc.

Absolutely amazing service.  Can't tell you how much this helps us with our scout requirements and trips.  We even orient with city maps because they are local and familiar while training.

Thank you,
Rich Collette, SM Troop 2 East Greenwich, RI, USA

I guess I should include an example where B&W does not come out well.   TF is the best base map I have found and even that results in a gray print out.

This would be a great feature to have for sure! I print maps for the same reasons and a color map printed in B&W just does not work for some areas. I end up spending a lot of time with my map colors trying to make the map more useable and that is very time consuming.

Sorry for not hopping on here sooner, but I think we'd have difficulty supporting this as an out-of-the-box layer.  One option worth trying might be the combination of MapBuilder Roads + Contours + MapBuilder Overlay.  It will give you contours, roads and trails in a fairly high-contrast layer, although you won't get any vegetation shading and the different elements won't play as nicely together (for example, labels from the mapbuilder overlay layer rendering on top of contour labels).
