CalTopo Snow Layers

Jonathan Roy

I just started using Sentinel-2 imagery to plan shoulder season trips. This is super helpful, especially the False Color Green option. However, there are 2 things that I'm left wanting:

1) More options to view snow cover, like a base layer with snowy areas colored and transparent background, or a snow cover overlay

2) Dealing with cloud cover in Sentinel-2 images in a more sophisticated way, like coding it as a "no-data" semi-transparent region in the base layer mentioned above, or inpainting the cloudy areas with snow cover predictions based on surrounding areas, recent cloudless images, DEM, etc.

I already looked at the NOAA snow layer from hikingguy.com, and it's not correct/high enough resolution, but I like the format. I would use the tool I'm hypothesizing to plan ski/hiking trips which benefit from high resolution snow coverage maps in the shoulder seasons. I'm willing to build them myself but looking for anything similar or related, and also looking for info on how to get a layer I make myself into CalTopo (make a web server and then use Custom Source as per NOAA snow layer?)

Also curious if other people would find a layer like this useful.
