Settings Display heading line error

theodore carson

With live tracking selected; and in the settings Display option, "Compass Heading Line" selected and north reference "True" selected, the bearing line is correct sighting on objects for navigation with the bottom map read out showing in true; HOWEVER if you select magnetic for North reference, then the bottom read out is in magnetic, and the bearing line shifts accordingly, BUT the map does not shift to mag north ref so the bearing line is incorrect as to what you are pointing at causing  navigation errors! Therefore currently to use the bearing line for navigation sighting, you MUST select "True" so the line points correctly to any object you are sighting, and then just mentally correct for magnetic if you need to.

We would be happy to take a look at this with you, can please email us at help@caltopo.com with some screenshots of what is going on?

Screenshots will not help...To see the actual error, you need to go outside where you can see a far away object, like a road intersection or building, that is also on the Caltopo map. First using a compass, take a sighting to the road intersection and write down the magnetic bearing. Now using the Caltopo map in live tracking with the compass heading line (True selected) turn in place until the bearing line points to the intersection on the map, look up and see that it will also be pointing at the actual intersection with the digital read out at the bottom reading in True (if I mentally correct for declination that matches the compass bearing I took..... so far so good..... but now change the Caltopo display to "Magnetic" while still holding your cell phone pointing at the intersection; the bearing line shifts away from the actual intersection you are sighted on, the map stays the same and if you again turn your body to have the bearing line point to the map's location of the intersection, and then look up, you are not actually pointed at the intersection any longer causing an incorrect navigation sighting. The bearing digital read out at the bottom does change to read magnetic.....  If working correctly; and the map itself does not move, then the bearing line should always be pointing at the actual object you are sighting and the only thing that would change going from mag to True would be the digital readout at the bottom of the map.
