Adding French IGN maps to Caltopo
Hi,
I have been trying to add the French IGN maps to my Caltopo account but so far it has been impossible.
I have tried several options (using directly a few different template requests, trying the autoconfiguration URLs linking to both the .json file and the getCapabilities XML file, etc.), but so far nothing has resulted.
Looking at section 3.3 in this website (sorry, it's in French...), it seems like the auto-configuration feature should work with the link below (as it is done in the Caltopo documentation for the BC maps:
https://wxs.ign.fr/essentiels/geoportail/wmts?SERVICE=WMTS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities
Does someone have an idea about how to tackle this? It would be really useful for me to be able to use these maps within Caltopo, as the inclination maps of the IGN maps are much more detailed than any other available source. If I cannot get them to work on Caltopo I might have to move away from the software altogether, although it is by far my preferred app.
Thanks!

I can't help you. It's frustrating. This is very easy to do in Gaia GPS.
I've tried it in CalTopo Pro Desktop with the Spain MTN25 topo map URLs from IGN's web site under "Downloads" --
https://www.ign.es/wms-inspire/mapa-raster?REQUEST=GetCapabilities&SERVICE=WMS
and
https://centrodedescargas.cnig.es/CentroDescargas/busquedaSerie.do?codSerie=02104
I succeeded at creating a new layer and displaying it, but it was empty. CalTopo each time said it couldn't process the data.
The process I used was on the desktop, > Map Objects > +Add > Custom Source, or WFS Source. These options might note be available based on your subscription level.
For future reference (and anyone else googling for adding France IGN maps to CalTopo), while the auto-configure URL doesn't work at the moment, it's possible to manually enter the correct template url. CalTopo support helped me figure it out. Here's the template URL to use (WMS format):
https://data.geopf.fr/private/wms-r?apikey=ign_scan_ws&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.3.0&REQUEST=GetMap&BBOX={bottom},{left},{top},{right}&CRS=EPSG:4326&Transparent=True&WIDTH={tilesize}&HEIGHT={tilesize}&LAYERS=SCAN25TOUR_PYR-JPEG_WLD_WM&STYLES=&FORMAT=image/png&DPI=72&MAP_RESOLUTION=72&FORMAT_OPTIONS=dpi:72
This uses the new-as-of-2024 data.geof.fr host instead of wxs.ign.fr. Many thanks for CalTopo support and Marc for helping me get this to work. You can also pick which raster layer you want -- in this URL, SCAN25TOUR_PYR-JPEG_WLD_WM.
Major thank you, Leo! I have a question for you. Is there a resource that lists the various raster layers that are available for use in this url?
I found the page on the French gov website before with the full list, but I can't find it anymore. I've found this: https://geoservices.ign.fr/services-web-experts which groups by type of map (you want the "Cartes" section I think: https://geoservices.ign.fr/services-web-experts-cartes), but that doesn't look as exhaustive as what I found last time. It's out there.. but can't find the page again.
