distance and elevation of a portion or "segment" of a line, route, or track?
This was asked in a Facebook group on 8/14/2023:
"I’m new to CalTopo and am racking my brain on how to determine the walking distance and change in elevation from my current location to a certain point along a route/trail that is preloaded into the app. NOT an "as the crow flies" calculation but rather along the planned route or trail. I had the same problem with Gaia and was told CalTopo can do it but I can’t figure it out. On a recent hike in Yosemite, all I could calculate was the "as the crow flies" distance. Essentially, how to click to tap to the route/trail. AllTrails is the only app I know that does this. Please advise. Using iPhone 13 Pro and Pro subscription."

If you create a line/route (you can use the "snap to" feature on the web to follow an existing trail), you can then view the distance/elevation gain of the line in the profile. Distance will be shown on the line itself.

Conversely, you can use the measure tool to measure distance, and click vertices along the line to follow switchbacks etc. This will be an estimate as you are not likely able to follow the trail exactly. https://training.caltopo.com/all_users/tools/measure#distance
