Record Track on Android not accurate when display/screen is off

matt.holly.m

Phone: Galaxy S10e   Anrdroid version: 12   CalTopo:  1.4.12  ( this issue also happened in prev ver 1.4.11 )

Caltopo settings:  Set to record track at "Highest" level.

Android settings:  Apps-->CalTopo-->Battery-->  Set to "Optimized"

Android settings:  Battery-->Background Usage Limits-->Never Sleeping Apps-->  Caltopo is listed as never sleeping app

When I am Recording a Track and the screen display is ON the track detail is extremely accurate.  However, as soon as the screen   does a timeout and goes blank ( regardless if timeout is set to 15 secs or 10 minutes or if I press button to turn screen off ) then tracking becomes very inaccurate and inconsistent.  When screen is off it appears the app only records track points at very irregular intervals because I end up with a bunch of perfectly straight tracking lines when i turn the screen back on.  If I keep the screen off for 5 minutes and then turn it back on to check the track I basically get 1 or 2 track points for the entire 5 minutes with two straight lines.  And, as soon as the screen is back on the tracking resumes with very accurate detail.

I have also tried this with the Android setting:  Apps-->CalTopo-->Battery-->  Set to "Unrestricted".  I get the same results as above.

Is there an Android or Caltopo App setting that I'm missing to get it to record tracks accurately when the display is off ?

Thanks

The setting for "optimized" battery allowance does not allow for background usage of the app. You will need to turn this to unrestricted for tracking.

If this continues, please email us at help@caltopo.com with your account and device details so we can investigate.

I am having the same issue. It used to track fine, whether the screen was on or not. Since about 8 months I've had this same problem. And I have a paid subscription to Caltopo. Double checked my gps settings, etc. no luck. Any suggestions, anyone?

I am currently having this problem on Android ver. 14. I am set to Unrestricted for Battery. Tracking points only register when the screen is on (the phone is unlocked). Interestingly Caltopo does not show up as an app option for the Never Sleeping Apps. I un-installed and reinstalled Caltopo and then it was an option in the list to select from for Never Sleeping Apps. After testing tracking and seeing the same issue I went back and checked and Caltopo was no longer selected as a Never Sleeping App and was no longer visible in the list to select from.

It is now working. I experimented with both app specific permissions/settings and general power management and screen lock settings and ultimately got it working. Unfortunately I don't know/recall exactly which change(s) fixed it.

    CalTopo ver. 1.18.1
    Samsung zFlip3 5G
    Android ver. 15
    CalTopo app permissions:
    Battery - Unrestricted
