Is it possible to use custom APRS-IS server?

Kiril Miloshev

We have private APRS-IS server, so our tracks dont mess up with all other HAM operators in the area.

Is it possible to change the APRS-IS server Caltopo uses ?

Thanks in advance.

Kiril

Kiril I'm not sure how easy it would be for us to use your APRS-IS server but I would like to get more in depth solving your issue of getting your tracks messed up with other HAM's. Could you contact us at help@caltopo.com?

Hello @Kiril Miloshev, I know this is a two year old post, but I just wanted to check in if you found a workable solution for your team?

I don't know if it would be helpful at all for you, but I've been working a lot with Meshtastic and APRS integrations to CalTopo Teams accounts recently and been finding some fun success. Super brief examples:

    • I've built an APRS-IS bridge that can now show local APRS stations under "Shared Locations" on a CalTopo Teams account. I set up a sub-team called APRS and all the received stations show up on the map and can be tracked if desired by clicking Record to Map, otherwise they just show their little dot when Shared Locations --> APRS is turned on. It would be extremely simple to just point that to your own APRS-IS private server and likely accomplish what you wanted.
    • Similar setup with Meshtastic, and I've got it working via serial connection (T1000-E to USB/Serial for example) but also over MQTT so the node connects to my phone's Meshtastic app, sends the encrypted/secured location of all local received stations to the MQTT server, and a bridge sends all received nodes back to CalTopo shared locations in my "Meshtastic" sub-team.

Prior to this I ran APRS and Meshtastic in to CalTopo Desktop with no problem and that was great, but I wanted to find some different routes to getting my local RF data in to the map and to have some more control over how it can be used or filtered.

I love the option of seeing all local stations show up under Shared Locations and then I can simply decide which ones to pay attention to by recording them to the map. Makes it easy when a SAR member shows up with a new radio or new callsign and I can see they are on our scene and add them to the map.
