Unnatural slope angle bands using DEM Shading

In a few locations I've noticed DEM slope angle shading showing some unnatural looking bands of steeper terrain, aligning with bold 200' contour lines on the map. See images below of the North Cascades in Washington (48.17532, -121.61394). Something looks wrong about it. I'm curious if other people have noticed a similar issue, and if so what the source of this could be?
