"Unable to parse" message when searching for place

Frank Goldsmith

Sometimes when I attempt to search a map for a feature (a road, trail, peak, gap, etc.), I get a message that the app is "unable to parse" my entry. Sometimes that happens even when I am typing in a feature exactly as named on the map I am using.  I can't find any guidance on the search function in the Guide for All Users.  Is there a way to avoid such errors?

    Hi Frank,

There are a lot of similarly named locations/features/roads/peaks etc. Searching in CalTopo will work for some major features (eg. very notable peaks like "Denali"), but it is not possible for us to program every single feature in the world to be searched. Using coordinates will be helpful in many situations.

How long does one have to wait for a post to be approved?

Is this a feature request?  Gaia can do this.  I don't imagine they hard-coded in every landmark in the world; I'm guessing it's part of their underlying map set (which I would have to imagine is at least in part common with the map set that Caltopo uses).

This would be an extremely helpful feature to have.

I agree. I was just hoping that the program could search for commonly known landmarks that are probably already named within the area I'm focused on (e.g., a local trail system I'm planning to visit).
