Accurate Markers

Hi -
So I am trying to use SAR topo to create a map of fire towers. The way we operate fire towers is that a lookout is in the tower. When he spots smoke, he provides a compass heading to MEMA dispatch who then in turn uses a thumb tack and string to plot the line on a paper map (see attached). I am trying to place markers directly on top of the fire tower roofs so that we will be able to click on the marker (center it in the map) and then add a bearing line so we can see this on the computer. The problem that I am having is that there are discrepancies between all of the different layers to where the roof of the tower actually sits. These markers need to be accurate so that the bearing line is correct. Can you offer any suggestions ( See attached photos).

    Hi Pete,
The reason these show the tower in a "different" position is because the satellite taking the photo was in a different spot. These towers have height above the ground so when taking a photograph from above the satellite is never (or likely never) passing directly above causing it to take a slightly "sideways" for lack of a better word picture casting the roof into a different spot. If you are trying to determine a position to that degree of accuracy your best bet will be to utilize a sub 1m handheld GPS device and go to each position. Maps are always just a representation of the real world and therefore there will always be some differences. If you require this degree of accuracy make sure you have a GPS device with the requisite accuracy (sounds like you are looking for sub 1m), standard commercial GPS (such as a normal handheld of phone will not get to that level of accuracy).

You can read more about mapping accuracy in our blog https://blog.caltopo.com/2020/10/08/maps-and-tracks-accuracy-precis... and https://blog.caltopo.com/2020/10/12/2232/

    Best,
    Ben

    Great - thanks very much-
One other question- do you offer official training? I am showing this software to so many fire and police departments- and actually conducting training to the best of my ability but a Cert would be 

    Pete,

We don't currently offer any official training although we have a training site and user guide that we continually update with new resources. I would recommend starting there if you haven't checked it out yet.

We do occasionally offer webinars and other types of virtual training. We will announce any upcoming opportunities on our social media, newsletter and blog so keep an eye on those as well.

Thanks for using CalTopo/SARTopo and sharing it with others!

    Best,
    Meghan

    Hey Ben -
Quick question, is there a way to enter the degrees symbol in the find bar when entering coordinates?

    Thanks,

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

You can use a space or a * in place of the degree symbol. You don't even need to include the minute and second symbols. For example, the search bar will parse
    38 11 23, -109 53 09
    OR 36d11m23s, -109d53m09s
    the SAME AS 38°11'23", -109°53'09".
You can NOT skip the negative (-) sign though. If your coordinates contain a decimal point, don't skip that either (ie 38.18972, -109.88583).

    Best,
    Julie

    Hi Pete,

Sounds good. Did you figure out the custom overlay question too? Or is that what you ended up using a map sheet for?

    Thanks,
    Julie
