How to print/Desktop-Offline

Hello Sartop, I'm a SAR member Washington State, how can I print a saved map with no service, Offline?

    Hi Jason,

    You'll need to use a computer with our Desktop program installed and running, with the proper layers downloaded. Then use the print function through that. Instructions for the various steps are at training.caltopo.com.

    Good morning Julie,

    Yes, I'm using a computer (mac).
    I've been using the program for a few years now with WA. SAR.
    I've watched the videos and able to do everything with wifi services

    I have the desktop version (previously off-line) I'm unable to print
    off-line, I was able to in the past on missions.

    I'm missing something or doing something wrong, can you please help before
    I find myself on another mission.

    Hi Jason,

    Do you have your browser window set very small? At a smaller size, the display changes to the mobile display and removes the print button. Try maximizing the browser window and reloading the page, or try in a new browser window that is the full size of the screen.

    Hi Julie,

    My screen is full sized on my Macbook, screenshot attached. When I'm on
    wifi, everything works fine. When off wifi, like on a SAR mission I can
    pull up my maps, make a map, etc. but unable to print with the same steps
    as I was using wifi.

    Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, thank you for all the help!

    Hi Jason,

    It looks like you have the print icon button on the left hand side so you should be able to follow the same workflow as you do while on the web app. I just checked and I was able to generate a PDF on the desktop app while offline.

    Can you describe the steps you are taking to try to generate a map while offline on the desktop app? Please describe the specific steps you take and what happens, including an error messages you may get.

    Hi Megan,

    Yes, when I do the same instructions while connected to a server all works
    great. When I follow the Desktop/Offline version it will not load the map.

    I have included the pictures below of my three steps. The map page just
    stays white. If I'm connected to a server then everything loads correctly.

    Do you have the base layers downloaded for the area? If they are missing, that would definitely cause this.

    Good morning Julie,

    I've followed the instructions and downloaded tiles while connected to
    wifi. Once I go into desktop, no wifi I can see maps. Once I try to print
    a map as shown it goes to a white screen, shows map number-code but nothing
    loads.

    Do you have any help to check that I downloaded everything correctly. I
    just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

    Hi Jason,

    Let's try a couple things. First can you check which base layers you have downloaded for the area you are trying to generate a PDF for? If you're unsure how to check coverage on the desktop app, this section of the user guide includes an explanation for how to do that.

    Next try to generate a PDF and ONLY select base layers/overlays that you have confirmed you have already downloaded for that area. If you try to generate a PDF and you have any layers selected that you have not previously downloaded, that can cause the issue you described when you are offline.

    Finally it does take a while for the PDF to generate. If something occurs that disrupts that process, it can also result in a blank PDF. Please leave the browser open and see if it does eventually generate.

    Try the above steps and let us know the result.

    Hi Meghan,

    I went through the process again to make sure my maps work offline,
    MapBuilder, Forest Service, etc.
    They work in desktop mode and when I generate the map it goes to the next
    screen and stays white for hours and will not load the map.

    I went online then to Desktop to make sure all tiles are loaded, showing
    shaded blue. I even selected my county again to load but shows all download?

    I read all the instructions and looking for a step I'm missing but I'm
    having no luck.

    Jason,

    I'm sorry you are still running into issues and I appreciate your patience while we work through the troubleshooting process. Can you tell me the exact steps you are taking when the PDF won't load? This includes what map you are using, whether you are online or offline, any and all base layers and overlays you have selected when you try to generate the PDF and the steps you take to generate the PDF. Any screenshots or error messages you receive are really helpful too. So far I've been unable to reproduce your issue- its working as expected for me- but if you can tell me the exact steps in detail, I can try to figure out what might be happening.

    Hi Jason,

    Thanks for the video- that was really helpful. I noticed that you have a few overlays selected including the Fire Activity overlay. If you have an overlay (or base layer) selected that you don't have downloaded, it can result in a blank PDF if you are generating the PDF while offline. I just tested it and having contours, MapBuilder overlay or Fire Activity selected resulted in a blank PDF generation. However if I deselected them and only had the MapBuilder base layer displayed (which I had downloaded), I was able to generate a PDF as normal.

    Try generating a PDF with only MapBuilder Topo while offline- which you said you had downloaded for your area- and let us know if that works as expected for you.
