text size: comparison between two different pdf print outs

Both images are the same scale both using TF outdoors base layer. One is a 12x18 generated at Mountyn.com the other is an 8.5x11 PDF generated by the print feature in map making. All other settings were the same. Aside from the area that these are covering (due to the different size paper) the important difference between them is that the text size (peak names and contour numbers) are tiny (about 1/2 size) in the 12x18 generated at Mountyn.com. They are essential unreadable which makes the map rather useless. Is there some way to remedy this? Thank you!

    Hi Sol,
I can see why this would be confusing. This explanation is a little over simplified but the gist of the reason is that for large prints through our partner we use a much higher DPI to ensure high quality when printing. For layers such as Thunderforest that are based on a raster source we have to use more images to create the higher resolution map. Layers that are variable by zoom (such as Map Builder Topo) typically will provide better results for printing with Mountyn.co, however there will always be some difference between printing with a profession printer and generating a 8.5x11.

    Best,
    Ben

Hi Ben, Thanks for your help. I think I do get the gist of your
explanation. The trouble I am having is that there doesn't seem to be any
other options for topography (with the exception of OpenCycle) in the area
I'm trying to map. Map Builder Topo has shading only, no contours with
elevation. Am I just out of luck here or is there any other work around
that you can think of? Thanks again!

    Q. Are there ways for Mountyn.com and/or CalTopo to remedy/fix/improve the unreadable/extremely small text size on maps that Mountyn.com prints on behalf of and in partnership with CalTopop, so that the font is readable? Thanks!

    Hi Sol,
Not sure where in the world you're making a map, there are spots where we haven't yet rendered contour lines on the Map Builder Topo layer though that will happen over this summer. Unfortunately there's no way around this issue for lower resolution raster layers like Thunder forest outdoors. The printing of these larger maps was really honed to look best on Map Builder Topo. USFS, and USGS layers since those are the most popular layers.

    Best,
    Ben
