Custom Icon

I have the need to add markers that contain up to 3 digits. The circular point marker allows entry of up to 2 characters, and works great until I need marker 100, 101, etc.

What is the best way to have an icon that allows me to enter up to 3 characters within it?

    Hi Douglas,

Unfortunately I don't have a solution to offer for this - at least not one that is reasonable. You would have to make custom icons elsewhere and import them, which would mean you would need a new one for each number.

Depending on what you are trying to do, you could separate things into folders or separate maps, and thus allow yourself to repeat numbers. Sorry but that's all I've got for you.

    Thanks,
    Julie

    Hi Julie,

If I created a custom icon, how would I import them? When I go to add a
maker and select style, there is a data entrable field for the URL of a
custom marker. A few questions about that:

    1) Can that URL reference a location on my computer where the symbol is, or
does it have to be hosted somewhere else (can it be a Google Drive
    reference?).
    2) can that URL reference a collection of symbols, or does it only allow
    reference to a single symbol?
    3) What format can the symbols be in? I verified that PNG works, but are
    there others?
    4) I read a thread on CalTopo help that had this:

"Alternately, you can host them somewhere and add the URL to the custom
field at the bottom of the marker style dialog, or since it looks like you
already have a pro-equivalent account, you can upload the images directly
to your account so that they'll automatically be visible. I'm having a hard
time digging up documentation at the moment, but click on your account name
at the top left, then the "your icons" tab, then "add new icon". Once added
it will show up on the marker style dialog."

It mentions uploading images to an account, but when I click on my name in
the top left, I don't see anything on the "Your Account" page that says
"your icons". Is there a way to upload symbols to my account so I don't
have to reference a new URL every time I want to add one of my custom icons?

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Julie,

One more thing before I spend alot of time creating custom icons - is there
a limit of custom icons I can add? I need to create about 180 of them.

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Julie,

I've been playing around with things and found the "Your Icons" under "Your
Data" . Not sure how I missed it before. It allows me to add icons from
my computer and they show up when I go to add a new marker.

I guess now I just need to create the icons for our reference posts
    1-170ish.

I did see another thread that talked about expanding the letters in the
circle symbol so things like LPP and LKP (Last Known Position) could be
easily added without having to create a custom icon. That thread was in
2019 I believe. Maybe it's still something that is being worked on.

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Hi Doug,

Since you currently have a pro subscription, your best option would be to import custom icons yourself and then save them to your account for future use. If you use a URL and the URL is no longer valid at some point in the future, then the icon will no longer display.

The process for importing custom icons is pretty straightforward and this section in our user guide describes it. You can only import one icon at a time and I'm not aware of any limit on how many icons you can import since we've never had anyone hit an upper limit. Once you import an icon, it will show up along the bottom of the Marker Style dialog- I would guess that if you have a huge number of custom icons, it may cause this dialog to load more slowly but again, I'm not positive about that since I've never tested it myself.

As far as format goes, PNG is your best bet for now. We did plan to add SVG to the list too but I don't think we've been able to get to that task yet.

    Hope that helps!
    Best,
    Meghan

I have added new custom icons for our team account and they appear in the Your Data Icon tab. However, we have about 14 custom icons and only 4 show up in Icon Style under our team icon list. Please help. I have tried both png and svg files.

    Thank you.

    HI Hilary,

Can you attach a couple of examples of the image files please so we can take a look at them?

    Thanks,
    Julie

I was able to get this to work.

Thanks to everyone on the team for their help.

FYI I've added 160 icons so far with no issues.

I have to say that Caltopo is a top rate product.

    Hi Hilary,

I think these images you sent me are too big. If you reduce the size to 24x24 px they upload fine. Of course they don't look as good then, but if you resize an svg it might look better.

I'm still perplexed about the ones that did upload but then did not display.

    Julie,

I resized the icons and made sure to refresh the page after adding each one
    and now it is working.

Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks for the update, Hilary. Since it sounds like everyone's issues are resolved, I am going to close this ticket for now. If anything else comes up, feel free to reach back out again.

    Thanks for using CalTopo!
    Best,
