Hi CalTopo Team,

It looks like the addition of smoke modeling/visualization in the Fire Activity overlay was recently removed - or maybe moved elsewhere? This feature is incredibly useful. There are other areas on the internet to see if smoke is impacting a particular region, but none I had found that matched the usefulness of Caltop.

If it's been removed, please bring it back!

Thanks!

Kyle

    Hi Kyle,

Thanks for reaching out! There was a number of issues with the layer we were using for smoke visualization and it was going to require a not-insignificant amount of development effort to try to fix. Around the same time, we introduced the GOES layer and ultimately decided that GOES was superior to the less detailed original smoke layer for providing insight into smoke coverage.

Hope that helps shed some light on the changes!
    Thank you,
    Meghan

Thanks, Meghan. Understandable if the data were difficult to work with. Could you please share the source you used in the former smoke viz option?

GOES certainly provides good temporal coverage, but requires the user to self-interpret the information - something a smoke viz product can really help with.

    Thanks!

    Kyle

    Kyle,
The data we displayed came from NOAA's Hazard Mapping System, its taken from GOES satellites.

    Best,
    Ben
