The Share Location feature says that you need to be a member of the team account for the feature to work. Our SAR team is around 150-200 volunteers. I'd like team leads to be able to share their location but I don't necessarily want to give them access to all maps. Is that possible?

    Hi Ed,

That is possible! To get the features I thing you're asking for, you would have to upgrade to an Enterprise subscription.

Enterprise accounts allow you to create multiple sub-teams and set privileges and map access for each sub-team. You could have your "mapping team" as the main team and then create a sub-team for your "team leaders".

A sub-team can only see their maps. They cannot see maps created by the "main team" or other sub-teams, unless specifically shared with them using a QR code or link. But when your "team leaders" share their location, the main team will be able to see the location on the "Shared Locations Layer".

There is a 25 user minimum for an Enterprise account. $20/user for volunteers, $80/user for paid employees of any org (including Sheriff Office).

If an Enterprise account is not in the cards for you, there is a kind of work around that has limited functionality and a less efficient workflow. You could add the team leads to the current team account but then pull “past” or “older” maps out of the account and store them in an individual’s account. You could also download them as a geojson and store them on a hard drive. You would then delete the maps from your team account but could upload the geojson at anytime.

I also want to make sure you know that you can add users to the account at the update-only level and they can see the maps but won’t be able to materially edit them.

Hope this answers your questions. If you'd like to move forward with an Enterprise account or find out more about it, please don't hesitate to ask.

    Happy Mapping,
    Kase

Can the "Event" feature be used to share location for non-team sartopo users?

Events are designed for large incidents that require resources from outside your organization and the ability to track them. We've seen things like fire evacuations (where you have numerous agencies arriving) and large mutual aid searches. Per our terms of use (copied below), events cannot be used to extend the size of your organizational account to members of the organization. Essentially we won't allow an organization to create an event for every time they are called out to avoid inviting members of the organization on to the team. For the use case you described above the method to do so in SARTopo is to use an enterprise account with sub teams and sharing hierarchy.

    From terms of service:
Events are a time limited extension of team features that allow users outside of the organization access to tracking, maps, and downloads, specific to a single event. An example of a typical use case for an event would be a mutual aid incident such as a large search and rescue incident or wildfire evacuation. Events are limited to 14 days at a time which can be extended by CalTopo staff in special situations. Please contact [email blocked] if you need to extend the length of an event. Events can not be used routinely to extend the size of the team account to members of the organization maintaining that team account. Team accounts are intended to be purchased to cover all members of a single organization, events are a way to extend outside of that organization on an as needed basis. Abuse of the events feature can result in additional fees for unlicensed users and repeat violations can lead to termination of the team account. Any questions about the use of the events feature should be directed to [email blocked].
