Travel Plan / Travel Time doesn't make sense

I have a travel plan based on waypoints that I added via the "create points" feature to split it up every 50mi. I set a custom travel mode (just for testing) to all 4mph flat/up/down.

Here's the first segment:

Start 39.49174, -105.09327 5493'
Start Day 02 (sat) 1 39.24098, -105.32720 7883' +8604' -6214' 46.14 mi 216° TN 29 hr 51 min 29 hr 51 min

I don't understand how caltopo is calculating that 46.14mi should take 29h51m - is there something else it is taking into account? I attached the full travel plan.

    Paul,

The values for "Up," "Flat," and "Down" are not mph speeds, they are rates used for a Munter Calculation. You can find more information here https://training.caltopo.com/all_users/objects/existing-lines#travel including a reference which explains how the Munter Method works.

The three recommended settings (hike, ski, bushwack) have been widely used in the alpine guide community for many years and are generally fairly conservative.

I can't easily find recommended values for biking online but you can try generating a travel plan for routes that you're familiar with and for which you know the time it takes and test out different constants to figure out what might be appropriate for you.

    Cheers,
    AJ
