Elevation gain during activity view does not match final elevation gain

This issue has come up on a few recent hikes, and while I would like to claim that I did 12,759ft vertical in less than 7 hours, sadly that is not the case. On a different hike it racked up almost 40,000ft in gain and appeared to be increasing even as I went back down. The final profile shows the correct elevation gain/loss so I am not sure what the issue is. Any ideas? It doesn't appear to be a nice factor of feet->meters or scaled by 10 or something like that. The horizontal distance does not appear to be off either, only thickening the plot.

    Hi,

The active elevation total while recording the track comes from the GPS source. This can be wildly inaccurate, much more so than the lat/long GPS data, because it takes more satellites to calculate elevation than it does to calculate lat/long position.

When the track is finished and you request the elevation profile, the elevation for that profile is calculated based on the digital elevation model (DEM) in the program. If you export the track, you also get the DEM elevation numbers.

    Thanks,
    Julie
