Differences in distance between maps and recorded tracks + other things

I used your app for the first time yesterday. The map that I drew on CalTop said that my route was 12 miles (a distance that other mapping apps have as well). When I recorded the hike, however, it recorded 14 miles instead of 12. Also, as I approached my destination (it was an in and out hike) the detail on the map I had on the app disappeared. It was a good thing I had another app with the map on it so I can see where I was going. Lastly, the downloaded gpx file had only details on distance not altitude gained or lost.

    Hi Mario,

Thanks for reaching out! It would be really helpful to have a little more detail so I can help answer your questions. Can you provide the following:

    • Do you have the map ID of the map you were using (caltopo.com/m/XXXX where XXXX is the map ID)? If this is a map that you don't want to share publicly, we can make the conversation here private.
    • How did you draw the route? Clicking, freehand, snap-to? Did you switch between methods as you drew your route? Or did you use the Measure tool?
    • Can you elaborate on what you mean by the detail on the map disappearing?
    • And were you just downloading the gpx file of your track?

Thanks for providing this information and we can go from here!
    Best,
    Meghan

I made the map public so you can see it, The map id is L10J. I drew it
using your map drawing features (lines for the trail and markers each
mile). The line drawn was snapping to the preexisting trail as I clicked
and as I wanted it to. I did not change methods. The recorded track is
also on my account but I don't know how to direct you to it. I added the
gpx file here. When using your app I synched the maps between my computer
and my pixel 3. The detail of the map (contours, and other features)
disappeared (i.e, no map details, only the drawn trail, and my track) as I
approached my destination. Also, as I uploaded the gpx file to another web
site (Gaia) besides the track, the only information uploaded was the
distance, no time spent, elevation, etc.

    I hope this is hepful

    Hi Mario,

Thanks for the detailed response! As far as the GPX track goes, GPX tracks are real world signals with no smoothing applied. If you are in steep areas or have intermittent visibility of the sky, you may have extra distance added. You can do smoothing when you come back to the web platform if you so wish by reducing GPS points. Other apps do a variable amount of smoothing.

And thank you for providing the GPX track. I uploaded your track into the Gaia app on my phone and I was able to see track info (speed profile, elevation profile, elevation time profile, etc). Did you click the side arrow next to the ascent in Gaia (this is how it appears in the mobile app, not sure if its different on the web version)?

And as for the details of the map disappearing as you neared your destination, did you download map layers for offline use on your mobile device? It sounds like you may have lost your data connection at this point during your hike.

Thank you for the reply. I was now able to capture all the information on
the uploaded track on GAIA. Regarding the map disappearing detail. I
downloaded the map and I had my phone on airplane mode! I could see the
overall map ok but when I enhanced it to reveal detail is when I lost all
    detail such as contours, etc.

    Hi Mario,

I looks like you couldn't have actually downloaded tiles for offline use because you don't have a paid account. At least a basic subscription is required to download tiles. What you likely did was sync your map items, but the background tiles were simply cached, and while these do work to some extent in airplane mode, they are unreliable and would produce the behavior you describe. To fix it, you would need to upgrade to a basic account at $20/year, or stay in areas with a network connection.

    Thanks!
    Julie
