Assigning Personnel to a Team to Populate the 104.

Our team is now using SARTopo for our "go to" platform for searches. We are also backing everything up with with a Garmin 64st and then importing our tracks to SARTopo. Is there a way to add personnel to a team and then assign that team to area assignments other than just the team size? If not, is it something that can be added?

    Hi,

Yes, it's possible. You can import a CSV file of resources including a list of names of people, and then assign individuals to the each assignment. You could also create mini-teams as resources to assign. (For example, add Team 101 as a resource and assign team 101 to assignment AA.) However, we already allow you to add team numbers to assignments so we recommend doing it that way rather than using the resources function to add individuals or teams to an assignment. This way you can quickly see that assignment AA has team 101 assigned and deployed in the title of the assignment. The list of names in resources also becomes cumbersome and difficult to navigate if you have a large operation with tens of field resources.

Additionally, when you print the 104 to PDF, you can type team member names into the spaces before saving or printing the form. If you assign the resource as a person to the assignment, then it will fill in the name for you.

    Hope that helps,
    Julie

    Thank you Julie,

To piggyback on this thread, it seems like a good time to re-vote for a
previous feature request regarding assignment object naming.

One drawback of setting team numbers as attributes of assignment objects
shows up when the command post exports assignment objects to searcher GPSes
    before they deploy.

The name of the exported track that shows up on searcher GPSes is '<letter>
<number>' so assignment AA, if 101 had already been assigned to it by that
time, would show up on searcher GPSes as 'AA 101' which can cause a fair
amount of confusion if there are reassignments in the field, or,
redeployments from the command post during the day, or, if any
team-to-assignment pairing changes need to be made before deployment.

Example, which has definitely happened to us and seems like it would happen
to others: If command staff says "oops we actually need to send team 101 to
assignment AC instead" for some reason, but the GPS exporters say "um, we
just finished exporting 'AA 101' to a hundred GPSes" then much confusion
ensues. This is basically an example of the general problem with
"hardcodes". The feature request is for an option to "only export
assignment letter, not assignment number" or whatever the appropriate way
is to word that. I know it's not top priority, but, I just want to raise a
hand again to point out that it is actually fairly impactful. Seeing 'AA
101' on the map while the team is actually deployed is very nice, but
exporting the hardcodes to GPSes is an issue. We've tried to mitigate that
by not setting the 'number' field of the assignments until after
deployment, but the problem remains for late-arriving teams or other
redeployments turng the op period. Thanks

Also the hardcoded pairings on printed maps can and has been an issue too -
not sure how to mitigate that, other than an option to 'only print
assignment letter, not assignment number' in a similar manner.

    Tom,

I think you already know that we aren't planning to do this. :) The app of course is a great solution for not having to export to GPS on every mission. We are working on so many solutions, especially for things like bringing late-arriving searchers onto a mission quickly and easily.

    Best,
    Julie

I know I've been asking for a lot of things that you don't plan to add to
the workflow, and I understand that, but I think there's some confusion
about this specific request. Could you please review staging #2062, Dec 29
2019? The last I saw on this one, still open, is that you would look in to
it. I know we've traded a lot of emails since then, so, apologies if I'm
missing anything on this one, but, I did just look it up again at
    https://help.caltopo.com/discussions/staging/2062-sartopo-assignment-naming-issues.
Anyway this feature request from us was intended as a middle-ground, as
opposed to the asking-for-the-world requests relating to the track
    ownership model, assignment maps, etc.

The existing solution for this will remain the solution. If you do not want a team number to display on an assignment or printed map simply do not assign the team to that assignment when generating those files. I do not anticipate any other changes here that would add additional complexity or edge cases.

    Sorry!

    Ben

Ok, thanks for closing the loop. Sorry to be such a pain on all of this.
