NOAA snow depth layer

First - Caltopo is the best, thank you! I was wondering if it would be possible to add a NOAA snow depth layer as one of the checkbox preset layers on the right side menu (along with fire activity, weather, etc) using data from

The NOAA website lacks the ability to control base layer, zoom (past a certain level, etc), which makes it harder to match snow boundaries up with roads, trails, etc. If you could just check a box and have it overlay in a Caltopo map, that would be fantastic.

Sorry for the delayed response, this got flagged as spam for some reason.

Personally I've found the MODIS imagery (particularly false-color) to be more useful than the NOAA snow depth later, but I'd expect that it will probably show up as an official layer in time for next year's ski season.

In the meantime, you can add it as a custom CalTopo layer. Add New Layer -> Add Custom Source, type WMS, template

You can use the "save to account" link at the bottom left to save it to your account, so it will always show up in the layer dropdown, without you having to re-add it for each new map.

FYI, I got this to work, but had to give values for the size parameter in the URL string. So instead of size={tilesize},{tilesize}, using something like size=256,256 worked. MODIS imagery is handy, but I do like the NOAA snow depth layer, as it gives a better indication of actual snow depth with the coloring. Just wish both had better resolution. :) A fun source of data is also where you can pull daily .kmz files you can play with in Google Earth.

That's odd - it worked for me with {tilesize} rather than a fixed size. Specifying a 256px size is mostly fine, but might affect PDF generation.
