I work for a firm that examines many maps on a daily basis, and started using caltopo.com which is proving helpful.
Regarding terrain statistics (tree cover, land cover, etc) obtained from a drawn polygon, where does caltopo.com obtain the information to do the calculations? Does it obtain the info from someplace external to it, or just done via image analysis? I don't need nitty-gritty detais.

I ask because my manager is inquiring. Thanks!

Slope, aspect and elevation are computed based on the 1/3 arc second US National Elevation Dataset (NED). Tree canopy and land cover come from the National Landcover Data Set (NLCD).
