Hi! I am trying to create an MGRS map of a mountain close to me to practice orienteering. Your guys’s software has been the best i’ve seen so far (thank you) but how can I tell what scale MGRS I am in as I zoom into the mountain? I am trying to create a 1:50,000 scale to practice on. How can I tell when I am in that scale? Also, once I go to print out the map, how can I size the map to be accurate enough when printed to use with a protractor? Thanks!

    Hi David,

When you are in the map viewer, there is a scale bar in the lower right hand corner that adjusts as you zoom in and out. To create a PDF with a 1:50,000 scale, select 1:50,000 from the Scale dropdown menu in the CalTopo Printing menu (you get this menu when you click on Print to PDF or JPG from the Print menu. This will fix the scale of the generated PDF and it will be accurate enough to use a protractor on when printed.

    Happy mapping,
    Meghan
