Map Printing

To Whom It May Concern:
Hello. I am the chief land navigation instructor for the Southern Nye County, NV SAR unit. Recently, a colleague directed me to your site (CalTopo & SARTopo - I assume both are the same company?). I have also reviewed your website information categories and viewed some of the youtube videos on your company -- very impressive, indeed. My questions are on creating and printing 1:24,000 scale topo maps (with the UTM and MGRS grid system for use with our protractors):
1. Is it possible to customize and print topo maps (1:24,000 scale) with the UTM/MGRS grid system?
2. Can the software print a minimum of 24'' x 36'' maps?
3. Do I need to purchase individual or team accounts (as per your website) to print the large maps (as per #2)?
4. If I need an account, are there discounts for SAR organizations? I believe one your archived articles indicated a $50 or $100 annual membership.
Thank you,
Hector E Marcayda

    Hi Hector,
    1) yes, when you go to print you have the option to add a UTM/MGRS grid
    2) Yes, it can print 24" x 36" maps
You have two options, one would be to create a team account (, more info can be found here:

The other would be to upgrade individually, go to and use the code: SRM826. This will upgrade you to pro for free and discount the price of the offline version.

Let me know if you have any more questions,

Thank you for your email and the response. I have a few questions on

    1. The website indicates that for SARTopo subscriptions, it is either
$2000.00 or $500.00. Is this correct?
    2. Are there less expensive costs which would give me the flexibility to
print MGRS and 1:24,000 scale customized maps? I can't find other costs,
aside from a dated blog which I referenced in my previous email...I believe
the archived article indicated $100.00 or $50.00 annualized.

I wish to confirm the quotes because I need to run it by our SAR Executive
Leadership Board. Please advise, and thank you for your assistance.

    1) The cost is $500/year for a volunteer SAR team.
    2) The individual upgrade would allow you the same capabilities for free. It would then cost $50 if you wanted to upgrade to offline capabilities. However, each person would need to upgrade individually.
    Does that answer your question?

I think I understand, but just to confirm, I would need the $500.00 annual
subscription for the SAR unit which would grant me an individual upgrade
for $50.00 per person. For example, there are 52 SAR members in our unit.
Our organization would pay the annual subscription rate of $500.00 and each
member would then have to pay $50.00 for the upgrade...the total cost
(assuming my math is correct) would be $3100.00 - that is $500 for the
annual subscription and $2600 for the 52 individual member upgrades.

Attempting to anticipate questions from my SAR leadership.

The two costs are separate. They are basically two different options, either a team account, or having folks upgrade individually.

You can either have each member upgrade individually using the coupon code I sent earlier. It would then be $50 if they wanted to upgrade to the offline version. Most teams usually have one or two dedicated "team computers" and just install the offline version there.

The other option would be the team account which is a flat $500/yr fee.

    Does this make sense?
    Apologies for the confusion,

My apologies, just one more time to confirm. If I elect the individual
membership option (individual upgrade), is the cost simply $50.00 per
individual account? I guess I am getting hung up on the "upgrade" portion
of your statement, because I am assuming there is an initial cost. I hope
I am not further confusing the matter.

For the individual membership option (upgrade), there is no initial cost. You can go to and use the code: SRM826. This then upgrades you to the pro level for free. The $50 cost incurs if you decide to pay for and download the offline version.

So basically, there is no "initial cost". Feel free to use the upgrade code for yourself right now, perhaps that will clear up the confusion.

That is too good to be true. I assume the offline version (upgrade cost of
$50.00) allows me to print larger maps using the MGRS? I apologize for the
incessant questions, but I am seeking an alternative (and les expensive)
solution to what I am currently using (MyTopo company). I am "old school"
(US Marine veteran, retired in 2003), and the topo maps we used were
typically made by the US DOD mapping agency (which is no longer in
existence). I am unaccustomed to customizing maps myself, hence the
questions. I do appreciate your patience and responses very much.

Thank you. I will take the matter up w/my SAR Leadership. I did in fact
follow your guidance and logged in to the site. Thank you again.
