How to Control Detail of MapBuilder Topo when Converting to PDF

I am new at this and trying to export a map to PDF so I can print. However, when I go to export the map I've noticed that I lose some of the detail in the MapBuilder Topo layer that I need in the final product. For example the names of trails and rivers disappear when converting to PDF. Is there a way to control the level of detail in MapBuilder Topo or is it just a matter of adjusting the scale?

Thanks!

It's likely just a matter of adjusting the scale. With a pro subscription, you can create custom mapbuilder variants (http://caltopo.blogspot.com/2015/11/mapbuilder-pimp-your-topo.html), including showing more/fewer objects at a given zoom level, but those options do not affect label density or placement.
