Troubleshooting live tracking

Hello,

I am on a SAR team of about 20 members, both Ground and Mounted (horseback). We are trying to implement live tracking into trainings via the Cal Topo app on individual members' cell phones, but we're running into issues where even though the members have a 'write access' link to the map, their track either doesn't show up (ever) or doesn't show up until some point in the future... possibly when they're back in wi-fi range but we're not sure. There is no commonality in cell service provider or phone type.

For example, at a recent training, I created a map before hand and shared it with 2 other team members. All 3 of us started tracking ourselves at our homes, as a test. That worked. But on the day of the training, NONE of the other 9 team members' tracks EVER showed up on the map, only the 3 members who had started tracks on a previous day, from a previous location.

My question is - is this because we don't have a Team account? We're using a combination of Individual Free and Individual First Responder accounts.

    Hi Sharon,

    Thanks for getting in touch. There are a lot of advantages to having a team account, but not having one should not prevent tracks from recording to the map.

    The most common reason that tracks don't record to the map is that the user didn't tell them to do so. Always make sure that the user has the map open before starting the recording, and that they have the track record to "account + this map" and not set to "account only."

    Finally, if cell service is poor or absent, or the user is in airplane mode, then it will wait for a network connection of some kind to upload back to the map.

    Let us know if those things don't solve the issue!

    Ok. Sounds like it must have been a data signal issue for all 9 of those
    people, since I got their tracks started myself. I know it was done
    properly.

    Hi Sharon,

    I don't know much about the Gotennas. We do not have any kind of direct integration with them. Do you know if they are sending location data and if that data is aggregated and sent to the internet live?

    I know they are capturing location in some way, if you can give me the
    specific questions to ask then I will check with them when they respond to
    my ticket.

    The location data would need to go to a REST API, which could then be added as a Fleet type locator in SARTopo. If GoTenna is able to serve up the location information to an API endpoint, then you can probably bring it into SARTopo and have it show up.

    I can check with our team here later this week to see if we've investigated it anymore on our end before.
