WednesdayHi,
I am considering a subscription and am deciding which one. What are the differences between standard and high resolution? Do you have a side by side comparison you can show me? Is high-res available in both the app/online and printing?
Best,
Dan

    Hello Dan,

The satellite images come from different satellite programs. The MODIS images, listed as Daily, work at a 30 meter resolution, while the Sentinel Weekly High-Res is produced at a 10m horizontal resolution. Neither of these will look anything like the Google satellite images which have a resolution that is measured in centimeters rather than meters, or the NAIP aerial imagery, which has about a 1m resolution.

You won't be able to pick out individual houses in the Weekly High-Res layer, but you could identify a significant snow patch and compare its size to a week before, or two weeks before, a month ago, etc. The layer is limited by cloud cover at the time of the image capture.

I've attached three images, all at the same center and zoom level: one from the MapBuilder Topo, one from the Daily Low Res, and one from the Weekly High Res.

    Best,
    Julie

    Hi Julie,

    Thank you.

Can you show me an example of resolution differences in one of the
categories below from the Basic and Pro subscriptions? And are there
resolution differences in each of these categories in those subscriptions?

    Dan,
These layers do not change with subscription level.

    Thanks,
    Julie

Ok, great, but still not completely understanding the differences.

So, what specifically are we looking at with respect to the difference
between standard and high resolution for downloadable maps in Basic and
    Pro?

And say I go with Basic to start with, can I upgrade to Pro anytime for $30
    more?

Sorry Julie missed the core of your questions.

Downloaded maps at standard resolution resolve to 4m for almost all layers, high resolution allows 1-2m resolution layers.

    Best,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Thanks very much. That sounds like a pretty good bump in resolution. Would
you have examples of both you can share with me?
Normally, it wouldn't matter cost wise, but right now I have subscriptions
to Gaia Premium and All Trails Pro and I need to justify more spend.
Can I upgrade from Basic to Pro anytime?
    Best,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

You can upgrade from Basic to Pro at anytime at caltopo.com/join. Currently the upgrade amount does not calculate correctly on the web (we are working hard to fix that) but it will be prorated on the backend. If you upgrade to Pro and aren't satisfied with your subscription, we offer a 1-year no questions asked refund policy and we can downgrade you back to a Basic or Free subscription. The 4 m resolution for offline map downloads is sufficient for most use cases- my recommendation would be to try the Basic membership and see if it leaves you wanting more! If that happens, then simply upgrade following the steps above.

I hope this helps you make your decision.
    Best,
    Meghan
