i am working on a map that has a lot of trails and potential future trails as well as markers. i wonder if there is a way to make a key so that the map isnt so cluttered with the names of all the trails and markers.
thanks

    Hi Sue,

You can turn off the labels or just the white background of the labels by using the Config menu at the top of the page. That should clean the map up quite a bit.

You could also set the labels to appear per folder, which would allow you to turn some of them on/off without affecting others.

    Best,
    Julie

thanks julie, the idea of putting things in folders was something i was
contemplating so that only some things would show up at any one time. even
when printing, various versions of the same map could be printed, each
showing contents from a different folder

I agree with Julie- folders are a great way of organizing map data. This article can provide you with even more insight into using the Config menu to accomplish this: https://help.caltopo.com/kb/basics/config-menu

    will work with folders.
another thing i was trying to accomplish was to take a read only map, make
it mine and make changes on my copy only. wal-la... a new map. you actually
have a youtube video on this from 2016. I was very excited and I tried
this. However, when I logged out of my account, the information on the map
I was looking at all disappeared. maybe things have changed on the program
since 2016? is there a way to do this?

    Hi Sue,

Could you elaborate on the steps you took to you make the map yours and what your end goal is (i.e. are you trying to collaborate on a shared map, make the map totally your own and update it, etc)? A number of features have changed, particularly in regards to collaboration, and I would be happy to help you with what you're trying to accomplish!

    Best,
    Meghan

    Hi Sue,

The workaround that was shown in that video no longer works because we have updated our collaboration features on the app. We are currently working on a big update and overhaul of our Knowledge Base so that it will be more current. We have a lot of new features and updates to the app so please be patient while we work on this!

It is even easier to do what you wanted to accomplish now. Go to the URL for the map that you wish to make your own (caltopo.com/m/XXXX where XXXX is the 4 digit map ID). Log into your account and then click Export (upper menu bar)> Copy to New Map. You can select which data you want to copy to your new map in the dialog box that appears. Click OK and then an unsaved map with the data you selected will be displayed. You can then save this map to your account and its yours!

    Best,
    Meghan
