I am able to import the PLSS KMZ file into Google Earth, but when I try to import it into CalTopo I get an error message that says "no importable data found." Can anyone advise how to import PLSS data into CalTopo?

Can you share the specific KMZ you're importing?

My guess is that the file doesn't contain actual polygons, but either has superoverlay images or uses network links to reference additional KMZ files, neither of which CalTopo supports.

Thanks for quick response Matt. File attached. It works for Google Earth.

Since my primary objective is to prospect for gold I need PLSS data as all claims use PLSS as the basis for determining claim location. See below for an example. I want to be able to superimpose PLSS data over CalTopo in order to map which claims are active so I don’t trespass on an active claim. Note clip from Google Earth with PLSS grid overlay.

    Best regards,

    Matt,

Here is the site where I downloaded the KMZ file: http://blog.gisuser.com/2011/12/05/public-land-survey-system-plss-data-download-connect-or-stream-into-google-earth/

Here is another site that may help: https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/there-a-layer-shows-public-land-survey-system-plss

That KMZ file contains a network link, which CalTopo doesn't support.

However from the second link you sent it looks like you can add a BLM WMS server as a custom layer. Add New Layer -> Add Custom Source, type WMS, URL template of

    https://gis.blm.gov/arcgis/services/Cadastral/BLM_Natl_PLSS_CadNSDI...

    As an example:
    https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=38.76927,-120.71404&z=8&b=t...
