Elevation gain data seems high lately

I did a hike that started at 9623 ft and ended at 12,069 ft. The total gain should have been around 2446 ft. I get 2960 ft when I look at the stats on my track. There was some uphill on the way back but not 500 ft worth. I have noticed this in the past couple on months, that the elevation gain in the profile is surprisingly more than what I think I did. Can you please let me know if this is something I am doing or if you guys changed something about the calculation? I am mapping the track in Gaia, which I've been doing for several years, so it isn't the GPS software that suddenly changed in the past couple of months

    Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for reaching out! To clarify, are you recording the track in Gaia and then importing the track into CalTopo?

    Thank you,

Sorry, yes that is what I’ve been doing.
I’ve been doing that for a couple years.

Thanks for the clarification. We are actually planning to revisit how the program calculates elevation. We are currently in the midst of some big projects but we are planning to revisit this functionality soon(ish).

Great. It would be interesting to do the calculation before and after you redo your algorithm with the same track(s).

We plan on it :) Thanks again for the feedback and thanks for using CalTopo!
