Vertical Elevation Totals Change When Joining Segments

Something interesting happened when I joined segments together. I am planning a bike loop in Oregon. During the route planning for day 1 I created 9 segments with a total of 4949' of elevation gain and 2448' of elevation loss. I then joined the segments together to create one segment and the elevation gain and loss totals were way off from the individual ones, 4104' of gain and 1599' of loss. The total mileage remained the same. I anticipated a little variance would be expected because of joining two segments that weren't connected, but these totals are way off.

Anyone with any ideas???
