Location tracking on maps you own and maps you don't.

How does location tracking and location sharing work, exactly? I've been working with this feature since the app was first introduced but the functionality has changed over the iterations.

It doesn't appear opening a map is enough to allow someone to share their location on the map. This means responding to a scene, and being provided the SARTopo URL, isn't enough to track an asset in real-time. Sometimes it seems entering the password for the map allows assets to be tracked, but not always.

Can you clarify what requirements need to be met in order for an asset to show up on the map and be tracked in real-time?

The easiest way to use location tracking is as a member of a team. Most of our testing has been around a map that was created as an object for the team, and for responders that are members of that team. That ensures that the write privileges are correct for the responders. You can use tracking without being a part of a team, but you are correct it has to recognize that you have the right to write to that map not just open it.

On top of that, you need to ensure the device is set up correctly to allow for CalTopo to use it's position. On android battery saver mode shuts down access to the GPS chip in the background making it impossible for CalTopo to obtain GPS locations. We've seen some issues with that in the past.

    Did that help clarify?

Yes, it helps. Here in Maryland we have law enforcement managing their own data and search plans and we just come in and work with their map.

It would be nice to be able to see user positions on the maps that we don't own without giving out the password to everyone. Maybe another setting on the map to allow this functionality?

It sounds like you need a team account that is how team accounts are set up with an option to have all team members have read/write access to maps. Team accounts enable members of that team to record tracks to, and see other tracks from team mates. You can invite guest users and they cover up to 100 individuals so your law enforcement agencies and representatives can be in your team account. More about team accounts is found at sartopo.com/groups/join Pricing is $500/year for volunteer/non-profit teams.

One of the problems that isn't addressed with a team account is the ability to basically write your tracks to the map but not be able to edit or remove things from the map.

LE doesn't like to give out the password for the map outside of the planners and ops people. The fear is more hands in the pot can lead to data being changed and this data is organizing a lot of potentially criminal information and evidence.

This is why I suggested the separate permissions for this.

So just to follow up on this.

We've discussed this quite a bit. We are looking at adding "ownership" to items so that we can create a permission level of modify objects you own only. In the meanwhile we may add a user level of write tracks only so that you can record tracks to team maps without having full blown edit capabilities. The former is months and months off, the latter could be around the start of the new year.

We definitely see what you're getting at here.

In the meantime we suggest keeping a private "master" map that you export daily in geoJSON and into a team map for each search day and then sync that back up to your master map on a daily basis.
