Issues with Android app on the LG V20

I got logged in once (now that is not happening and I am not even asked for my PW)

Never saw anything past the login screen.

Will keep playing with it.

Is it the LG V20?

Evenmore questions after reading the "help" I don't have an offline tab on the web page and the interface is so sketchy I can't find the information I need to see what level account I may need for this added feature....

Anyhow the reason for the post is to give feedback on the Android app.. that does not work on the LF V20 so far.

    Joe,

You should remain logged into the app after logging in once. Click the 3 bars on the left, settings, account details and you should see your account name and last sync.

Regarding the offline tab, I'm not certain what you're referring to. If you're referring to the map tiles you've downloaded for offline use, they will be shaded light blue when you click the 3 bars then the offline layers. If it's something else, let me know. Please be aware that the app is still in beta, so there are bugs to fix and features that haven't been completed yet.

    Thank you,
    Rom

All I can do with the app is to enter my user name ([email blocked]) I
    hit the login button
and that is as far as I get. There is a screen with a purple header with a
URL and a blank screen below it.

I have repeated this behavior 5 or 6 times and I am now not getting any
further. The first time I was asked for my PW but that is now not the case.

If you have ideas I am willing to try. I am a computer science person so
    hit me up. :-)

I don't do "dumb as shite phone" screen shots very well Rom :-)

I took the shots but after 15 minutes in the gallery I give up trying to
    find them on this POS.

As you can tell I am not a fan of these spy devices that never ever work
    correctly it seems.

Have your developer contact me if he has any suggestions.

    Joe -

The app goes out to the browser to sign you in. I assume the first time you were prompted for a username / password was google signing you into gmail before passing you back to the app; after that you're still signed in to gmail and it sends you back automatically.

What is the URL (or at least the first part of it) for the white screen you're seeing? If you're up for it, you can use Chrome's "remote devices" tab to look at the web page's javascript console and see what the issue is, but that does require turning on developer mode on your phone, so there's a few extra hoops involved.

Developer mode is already on. I am not good with the POS called smart
    phones at all.
This time things changed I have an app activation screen the URL is
    https://caltopo.com

It now looks like I am in the app. I have no idea of why it took 20 some
tries. Perhaps code at your end chaged?

Thanks... now to figure out the app. :-)

    Hi Rom

I am going to give you short feedbacks as I learn this app.

I hope you get some sort of feature tutorial together as I and I think many
    others
find these apps very non-intuitive, much less intuitive than desktop
    apps.

The first thing I noticed was that the grid maps are being DL'ed using my
data connections and did not ask for wifi
to do so. I am hoping here may be a configuration setting for this. I will
    look sooner or later.

I would also like this grid DLon my desktop view into Caltopo
If I am in the field I have no internet and would like these maps on my
    laptop.
Not hard to print on the road with a cheap inverter in your car.

    Take care

    Joe,

We definitely need to build out the knowledge base for the apps as we move beyond beta testing.

Data vs wifi is a setting in your general android settings outside the app.

Offline use via desktop is a seperate beast entirely requiring an offline level subscription. Feel free to read about offline use here. (http://help.caltopo.com/kb/caltopo-offline/)

really poor control over DL over the cellular network.
I know it's too early to think about it but putting the choice of

    2 cellular data only
3 Wifi first and if not cellular

In the app would be an eloquent solution.

What is this? It has taken me a week to discover that caltopo does not do
one of the most important things I want it to do....

Could this not be made a LOT clearer so that people do not waste days of
their time learning an interface that is not suitable to their purposes?

I think it reasonable to assume that any maps that you create are
printable, and if they are not, it would be really nice to be immediately

My apologies on any difficulties you're having. Depending on what you're looking to display, you should be able to use a different layer.

If you need satellite imagery, sub in the NAIP layer. If you need street names, the Mapbuilder or Open Street Map layers should work.

Some sort of warning/tutorial is a good idea and I'll add it to the list of potential future features.

    Thank you for your input,

    It's all good.

It stands for National Agriculture Imagery Program. Basically, it's publicly available satellite imagery, so we can use it without the restrictions Google imposes.
When selecting the layer in the upper right, it is right above the Google Layers. The sub heading is Aerial imagery. NAIP 2013-2015 and NAIP 2011-2013 (years of the imagery)

    Joe,

Regarding the scale, I suppose that depends on the resolution of your printer and the paper size you're printing on. Generating both scales 8.5 * 11 and just viewing the PDFs on my computer, they look fine. I've never felt the need to print aerial imagery personally, so can't speak to what resolution printer you need for what scale.

Regarding saving a map, this is related to whether or not you have created objects on it. If you haven't added any of those, the map is actually saved just via the URL. Just copy it out of your browser or hit the share button if you need a shorter link.

    Thank you,

    Some more feedback:
The choice of layers is redundant to large extent. It is extremly
    difficult
to know what layers to choose. I have experimented at lot but is still can
    be confusing.

I seem to have USGS details on a map using "mapbuilder hybrid" layer
I see a power line. Yet the printed PDF shows no trace of this power line.

    Joe,

Mapbuilder is largely based on Open Street Map, a user submitted, public database. It is not based on USGS maps, which is why there are differences between the two. To be frank, in my experience I find Mapbuilder to be more reliable than the USGS maps, but they both have their place and I often find myself comparing the two. We are always in the process of making difficult choices about what layers to remove vs add as there is only so much one tool can do without being needlessly confusing.

I hear you on CalTopo not having the most in depth learning resources. A more deep dive tutorial series would be super helpful for a host of users as there is quite a steep learning curve here. It is definitely on the list, though it's a long list and we are a super small company with limited resources.

Thank you for all the feedback,

    I would write a small manual ( I don't have much time)
If I understood the app that is. It's a cart before the horse kind of thing.

I too have a good feel for mapbuilder this early in the game.

The satellite overlays are super helpful in certain situations such as
cutting cross country, in these parts of MO as there a bulls
in most of the open pastures, and being able to see where homes are located
(I don't see them in map builder)
can help friction with some of the local farmers.

"Guerilla hiking" I call it. We are a far way from the laws in Sweden
where one can walk and camp anywhere in the country provided you are 100
yards from a home. Land of the free my rear end.
