I would like to record a track, but the Location Tracking pop up says I must load a map before recording?
I have downloaded some tiles, but this is not enough?

    Hi David,

Are you referring to the new track recording dialog, which says "All recorded tracks are saved to your account. To additionally save the track as a line on an existing map, you must open a map first."?

You shouldn't need anything downloaded to record a track. All that this message is saying, is that if you'd created a map with CalTopo on your desktop (something that contains lines/areas/jpgs that you added) and you want your track to appear on that map, you'll need to open it before recording. It looks like you haven't created a map, so here's an example of one someone else created.(https://caltopo.com/m/7K5L) As an example, if you wanted to see how your actual track compared to the Mt. Diablo Loop Trail you'd drawn on the map, you'd need to open that map first before recording.

I hope that helps, let me know if you need further assistance,
    Rom

In that case, I guess I just do not see how I begin to record a track.

    David,

I’ve attached a screenshot for you. Hitting the little satellite dish button in the lower left will open this dialog. Name the track and hit start recording.

    Thank you,
    Rom

Is your screenshot the IOS version? My Android version does not have icons
on the bottom of the screen.

    David -

Sorry, the Android version will mimic that UI with the next release but it hasn't been updated yet. With the current version, tracks can only be saved to an existing CalTopo map; this is because the app and website don't yet have another place to put them (ie, tied to your account). If you don't want to save to an existing map, add a marker via the center icon at the top of the screen, save the map via the top-left 3-bar menu, record to it, and then delete the marker when done. I realize that's not the smoothest workflow, it will be addressed in the next release (probably a few weeks from now).
